CHAPTER 17

The Sky News team had been on the scene all night long – nonstop through the early hours while a horde of firefighters doused the flames of the burning wreckage and the destroyed bookstore and now as the sun peeked through the clouds over London and investigators went to work. The late night rain had helped keep the fire from spreading through the entire block of businesses. The acrid smell of smoke filtered through the air along with the distinctive odor of burnt chicken – the charred shell of the KFC indicated it wouldn’t be serving any finger-licking goodness anytime soon. The only thing left of the retro clothing store was the display racks – the merchandise having been incinerated.

Yellow police tape surrounded the scene. The usually bustling Notting Hill Gate area was vacant. The ubiquitous double decker busses and taxi cabs detoured around the area. The cameras looking down the street recorded tourists and locals gawking at the horrific scene behind police barricades.

“Let’s begin the top of the hour with a live report from the scene. Rachel, what can you tell us?”

Rachel, the Sky News reporter, had on a blue raincoat, but with the rain now stopped, she took down the hood to show off her wavy red hair. With microphone in hand, she turned sideways and pointed to the rubble.

“Phillip, I can tell you that some people have described it as a war zone,” she said dramatically, as the camera zoomed in down the street at the carnage. “At approximately 7:30 p.m. last evening, a Mercedes carrying Pervez Khan, the son of Pakistan’s Interior Minister, failed to navigate the slippery wet streets and crashed into a light pole. It then jumped the median and came to rest on the sidewalk. Two vehicles, both registered to the Pakistani Embassy, also failed to make the corner at Notting Hill Gate and plowed into the Mercedes. It is believed all three vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed. The crash apparently ruptured the fuel cells in each of the three vehicles, causing a massive fireball that one witness said sounded like a bomb going off.

“Mr. Khan, as well as five other Pakistani officials, was killed in the accident. I can tell you Mr. Khan was on his way to the Russian Embassy where he and other Pakistani leaders were set to celebrate Pakistan’s membership in the G-20.”

The camera zoomed out and focused again on the red-haired reporter.

“As you can also see, several businesses have been destroyed in the fire. Brigades from as far away as Lambeth joined in the effort to put out the blaze. The investigation into the crash continues, and the area of Notting Hill Gate surrounding the scene has been cordoned off and is not expected to open until later on this evening. Phillip, back to you.”

Two miles from the scene of the crash, Peter Daniels, the White House correspondent for Fox News, was beginning his live report back to the still sleeping United States.
